What is the difference between Breast screening and Breast Surveillance?

Breast screening involves regular breast mammography and examination to help reduce illness and death from breast cancer by allowing earlier detection of the disease. It is done for women where there is NO suspected breast cancer. It is often done through BreastScreen Australia which is a national breast cancer screening program.

All women aged 40 and over are eligible for free mammograms every 2 years.

Breast surveillance involves diagnostic breast assessment and imaging in those with a previous history of breast cancer, or risk factors for breast cancer. This includes regular clinical examinations, annual mammograms, ultrasounds and sometimes breast MRI assessment. These investigations are more detailed than a screening mammogram.
