Macromastia is a term used to describe enlarged breasts in excess of their normal proportion. Large, heavy breasts can cause functional impairment and psychological distress. This includes neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, poor body image, low self-esteem and reduced quality of life.

Macromastia is not a condition requiring multiple investigations. Routine breast screening is recommended. Large breasts may occur due to hereditary, dietary and environmental reasons.

Breast reduction surgery may be recommended if an individual is undergoing mental +/- physical impairment as a result of their large and heavy breasts. (See breast reduction surgery)

Breast Reduction surgery can be discussed further with your surgeon. It can help treat large breasts and their associated issues.
